LiMo believes that the growth of the mobile industry depends on the existence of a broadly accepted operating system.

Without a commonly accepted operating system, the industry is fragmented: handset manufacturers are forced to keep investing in their own operating systems.  The existence of so many incompatible operating systems inhibits developers of third-party software from investing in the development of unique applications -- for business users, entertainment, games, music, etc. -- that will ultimately drive industry growth.

The mobile industry has followed LiMo’s lead and is now witnessing a rapid, seismic shift towards collaboratively developed operating systems.   Within five years it is projected that 80% of mobile industry OS volumes will be open and collaboratively developed systems making widespread use of Open Source technology – with the remaining 20% remaining as proprietary systems.  Furthermore, 60% of industry OS volumes will use Linux Open Source technology, with LiMo residing at the majority of Linux-based OS and device implementations.
