LiMo believes that the growth of the mobile industry depends on the existence of a broadly accepted operating system.

Without a commonly accepted operating system, the industry is fragmented: handset manufacturers are forced to keep investing in their own operating systems.  The existence of so many incompatible operating systems inhibits developers of third-party software from investing in the development of unique applications -- for business users, entertainment, games, music, etc. -- that will ultimately drive industry growth.

The mobile industry has followed LiMo’s lead and is now witnessing a rapid, seismic shift towards collaboratively developed operating systems.  For an Industry Platform to have maximum impact, it is important that it be based upon guiding principles of independence, openness and equitable collaboration; these guidelines are fruther explored in this white paper entitled "The Four Cornerstones for a Mobile Industry Platform."

Within five years it is projected that 80% of mobile industry OS volumes will be open and collaboratively developed systems making widespread use of Open Source technology – with the remaining 20% remaining as proprietary systems.  Furthermore, 60% of industry OS volumes will use Linux Open Source technology, with LiMo residing at the majority of Linux-based OS and device implementations.
